What Should I Do (This Summer)…?

At the end of the spring semester The Basement College Ministry will be heading on a 6 day mission/adventure trip. We know that we’ll be cave spelunking in Chattanooga, TN & spending the night in Raccoon Mountain. We know that we’ll be doing some adventure racing & enjoying a few hours at a hillbilly water park. And we know that we will be cruising down the middle section of the Ocoee River. But what we are still unsure about right now is who we will be serving during our trip. We have a few options, all of which are people in great need, who we can assist.

This decision process that I’m in the middle of, reminds me of the many different conversations that I’ve had w/ college students about choices. There are so many options for students today… whether it’s what church or campus ministry to join, what IM team(s) to play on, or what professional clubs/organizations to be involved with, there are a plethora of choices for students.

You have limited time, money, resources & effort to put towards making a difference for Christ. So instead of just going w/ the first choice that grabs you (emotionally or relationally), spend some time thinking critically about how you can make a well informed decision. Start researching what will help you make the most impact, & then ask God where He would have you join, serve, or play.

So we’re in the process of praying for & about the people of Alabama. Birmingham has thousands of people that are in need of help, & thousands of people that are coming from around the country to help. Phil Campbell, AL has a population of just over 1,000 & a church in need. Mountain View Baptist Church was completely destroyed in the tornados of 2011 (see video footage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Yl5ROs5goCg). Four people from their congregation, including a young boy, were killed last year as twisters ripped their town apart. It’s easy to forget these people b/c they seem to be in the minority of those in need. In making this decision we also have to weigh out the financial options of housing & meals in both situations, which on the surface makes Birmingham seem like the easier option, but if God wants us in Phil Campbell He’ll make a way for us to get their financially.

So pray with us about the impact that we can have for the Kingdom of God & how you can join with us this summer.
